OUR ETHOS
Biopsychosocial
approach
.
The biopsychosocial model acknowledges the patient as a whole person, which encapsulates their social, cultural, and environmental context that shapes an individual’s response to illness.
The Biopsychosocial model was first conceptualised by George Engel in 1977, suggesting that to understand a person’s medical condition it is not simply the biological factors to consider, but also the psychological and social factors.
The Three Components
- Bio: physiological pathology
- Psycho: thoughts emotions and behaviours such as psychological distress, fear/avoidance beliefs, current coping methods, and attribution
- Social: socio-economical, socio-environmental, and cultural factors such as work issues, family circumstances, and benefits/economics

THE HOW
Implementing
a biopsychosocial approach
.
The use of the biopsychosocial model as a clinical practice guide in physiotherapy allows our physiotherapists to be aware of all the factors that influence the patient’s state of health.
Using issues of persistent pain as an example, your physiotherapist will firstly focus on increasing your overall functional capacity. This typically involves increasing strength, mobility, and endurance while decreasing stress, anxiety, and/or pain. Depending on the type of condition, duration of symptoms, and patient-specific circumstances, different levels of care can be selected to treat your persistent pain experience.
Most patients who experience an injury or trauma, experience a good outcome following treatment. However, sometimes psychological and social factors interact with your physical dysfunction. This requires a more in-depth rehabilitation process to restore your full function. Clinicians at AF Physiotherapy have the knowledge and tools to help you throughout your journey.
